An obligatory sightseeing spot for any tour to Ho Chi Minh City, Ben Thanh market is a destination no visitors should miss.
Formed before the French arrived in this land, the initial waterfront market was located along the Ben Nghe River, at a wharf near Quy citadel (Gia Dinh citadel), which was how the name “Ben Thanh” (Wharf-Citadel) came about.
In 1911, the French colonial government decided to relocate the market to its present location. Its construction began in 1912 and lasted until the end of March 1919 and the market has been in continuous operation since then.
Ben Thanh is considered one of the largest retail markets. Here one can find practically everything, from affordable to high-end goods, as well as the most diverse selection of food products./.
