Hanoi(VNA) – President Truong Tan Sang said he hopes Bach Mai General Hospital can become a modern health facility and keep up with large hospitals in the region and the world at large.

Speaking at a ceremony in Hanoi on February 19 to mark Bach Mai General Hospital ’s 105th founding anniversary, the State leader praised the hospital for its achievements and contributions to the country.

He stressed that improving public health will raise living standards and ensure human resources for national construction and defence. Also, improving the Vietnamese people’s body stature and life expectancy is among top priorities for the Party and State.

The 12 th National Party Congress put forth tasks to develop medical centres, improve health check-ups and treatments at all levels, strengthen the preventive medical system and set up a strong staff of health workers, the President noted.

As a leading hospital, Bach Mai General Hospital should share the burden with the health sector to fulfill the above-mentioned targets, he said.

President Truong Tan Sang suggested the hospital accelerate scientific research and the application of medical advances while raising its staff members’ professional qualifications.

On this occasion, Bach Mai General Hospital for the second time received the Independence Order, third class, a noble award from the Party and State.

Founded in 1911, Bach Mai General Hospital became the largest health centre in the country after the August Revolution in 1945.

During the American War, the hospital sent many doctors and health workers to the southern battlefield, and conducted various mobile surgeries for people and soldiers in Military Zone 4.

Currently, Bach Mai Hospital is the largest medical facility in Vietnam . It handles the examination and treatment of about 1.4 million patients each year.

Apart from working with the health sector to combat various diseases, the hospital also serves as one of the country’s leading scientific research and training centres.-VNA
