The Australian government has pledged an additional 3.25 million AUD (2.3 million USD) for the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), bringing the donor’s total financial aid to 29 million AUD or 20.5 million USD.

In a recent statement, Acting Director of the ECCC Office of Administration Kranh Tony expressed his thanks for the continued support offered by the government of Australia and believed the contribution will help the ECCC complete its mandate in a timely fashion.

The United Nations-backed ECCC, commonly known as the Khmer Rouge Tribunal, was established in 2006 to seek justice for victims of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime which claimed the lives of about 2 million people from April 17, 1975 to January 7, 1979.

Japan, the US and Australia are the largest financial contributors to the ECCC, whose operations have cost about 204.5 million USD so far.-VNA
