The Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) held a solemn ceremony to commemoratethe 36th anniversary of the historical victory over the genocidalKhmer Rouge regime on January 7, the end of what is widely consideredthe darkest period in Cambodian history.

The eventwas attended by over 10,000 people from all walks of life, including CPPHonorary President and President of the National Assembly Heng Samrin,CPP Vice President and Prime Minister Hun Sen, and Vietnamese Ambassadorto Cambodia Thach Du.

The ceremony aimed tomemorialise and express sincere gratitude for the heroic martyrs,Cambodian patriots, and Vietnamese volunteer soldiers who gave theirlives to free Cambodia from the brutal genocidal Khmer Rouge regime, stated Heng Samrin.

The event was also intended tocommemorate the 3.3 million victims of the genocidal regime and pray fortheir souls, he added.

Reviewing Cambodia’s historyduring the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime (1975-79), Samrin noted thatthe Cambodian United Front for National Salvation, formed on December 2,1978, united and inspired Cambodian people to rise up against thebrutal regime and call for support from peace-loving and justice-drivencountries around the world.

In response to the call,Cambodian people, with the timely and great support of Vietnamesevolunteer soldiers, won a series of battles that led to a completevictory on January 7, 1979, saving the lives of innumerable Cambodiansand beginning a new chapter of Cambodian history of independence, freedom, democracy, and progress, said Samrin.

Theachievements recorded since January 7, 1979 have brought justice toCambodian history and cannot be sabotaged or distorted by any individualor force, he continued, adding that the trials for top leaders of thegenocidal Khmer Rouge regime held by the United Nations and Cambodiaalso contributed to bringing justice to Cambodian people.

Highlighting achievements over the past 36 years, Samrin emphasisedthat between 2010-14 Cambodia experienced an annual economic growthof 7 percent, which is forecasted to continue in 2015. Cambodia hasnot only achieved food security, but also become a rice exporter, helping to reduce the poverty rate to 18 percent in 2014, he noted.

According to Samrin, after the CPP and the Cambodia National RescueParty reached an agreement on July 22, 2014, the political situation inthe country has increasingly become stable.

The CPPhas always considered reform process a key factor in determining thesuccess of its political programmes for the development and prosperityof the country, and to ultimately enhance Cambodia’s position in theregion and the world.-VNA
