2,000 chung cakes sent to kids in mountainous areas ahead of Tet

2,000 “banh chung” (square glutinous rice cakes) were packaged recently in Hanoi and sent to students in difficult mountainous areas in Vietnam’s north as part of a programme to bring warmth and a fulfilling Tet to children.

In the cold of the closing days of the year, the atmosphere at Chu Van An Elementary School was livelier and more festive than ever. The booths were beautifully decorated, filled with a Tet atmosphere featuring peach blossoms, bamboo poles, “banh chung”, and cultural performances.

The activities were part of the “Spring of Connection - Tet of Love” programme, co-organised by the Vietnamese Youth Alliance Club, the Community Disaster Prevention and Control Fund, and the British University Vietnam Volunteer Club.

The highlight of the program was making 2,000 “banh chung” to present to children in mountainous areas, in the hope of bringing a warmer Tet holiday to underprivileged children.

Other activities included an early Tet reunion lunch for 500 students in Bac Kan province, and 2,000 Tet gifts, including chung cakes, clothes, and food essentials to social beneficiaries, children, and families in difficult circumstances in Bac Kan, Tuyen Quang, and Hoa Binh provinces.

Held for 9 years, the “Spring of Connection - Tet of Love” programme embodies a spirit of mutual assistance, of helping each other in difficult times, which are among the precious and beautiful traditions of the country, expressing love and care for children in mountainous border areas./.
