Yen Bai: At least 10 found dead in floods

Floods following torrential rains have wreaked havoc in the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai, resulting in heavy casualties and property damage.

Yen Bai (VNA) – Floods following torrential rainshave wreaked havoc in the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai, resultingin heavy casualties and property damage.

As of 9am of July 21, floods had claimed 10lives, injured 11 and left eight other missing.

While nearly 3,900 houses have been damaged with97 of them collapsing or being washed away, more than 1,900ha of crops havebeen destroyed and over 1,200 head of livestock and poultry have been killed.

Downpours and flooding have also devastated260ha of aquatic farming in Tran Yen and Yen Binh districts, Nghia Lo town andYen Bai city.

Landslides have happened along severalirrigation works and roads. Meanwhile, contact with some localities in Yen Baihas lost as floods broke electricity and telecom facilities.

Almost 700 households in vulnerable areas of theprovince have been evacuated to safer places.

Damage is initially estimated at some 200billion VND (8.7 million USD).

Facing the heavy losses, Yen Bai has mobilisedmore than 17,000 people to search for the missing and address floodconsequences. 

Aside from the province’s financial and riceaid, the Vietnam Red Cross Central Committee also decided to provide money andbasics worth 216 million VND (9,400 USD) in total for flood victims in theprovince.

On July 20, a working group of the centralsteering committee for disaster prevention and control, search and rescueinspected the settlement of flood impact in Van Chan district.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and RuralDevelopment Hoang Van Thang, deputy head of the committee’s standing board,sent sympathies to the province and asked it to be more active in dealing withflood consequences and evacuating residents in vulnerable areas to minimisehuman and property losses.-VNA
