Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – As many as 520 wheelchairs worth 1.53 billion VND (67,100 USD)donated by US organisation “Giving it back to kids” were presented to thedisabled and orphans in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue on April 12.
The wheelchairswere given during an event held to mark the 25th founding anniversary of theprovince’s Association for the Support of Handicapped and Orphans (April 9).
Vice Chairman ofthe provincial People’s Committee Dinh Khac Dinh said Thua Thien – Hue iscurrently home to more than 29,000 people with disabilities and nearly 4,600disadvantaged children, including 377 orphans.
During 25 yearsof its operation, the province’s Association for the Support of Handicapped andOrphans has implemented a number of policies on social welfare, raising publicawareness and life quality for people in need, he added.
To date, theassociation has mobilised more than 72 billion VND (3.16 million USD) for handicappedpeople and orphans in the province, as well as arranged rehabilitationprogrammes and free orthopaedic,heart and optical surgeries for manydisadvantaged children.
Chairman of the association Pham Ba Vuong said it will continue workingto enhance the efficient use of the funds for the local handicapped and orphansand build more public services and infrastructure to support people withdisabilities.
On the occasion, the association handed over scholarships worth 500,000VND each and one scholarship worth 2.4 million VND to 41 local students.-VNA
