Vietnamese PrimeMinister Nguyen Tan Dung made the affirmation while delivering a speechat the second Nuclear Security Summit 2012 in Seoul , the Republicof Korea (RoK), on March 26-27.
The Vietnameseleader highly valued the RoK’s efforts in organising the summit,stressing that it has helped strengthen political will and cooperationin joint efforts to ensure nuclear security and safety.
He also affirmed support for the organisation of future nuclearsecurity summits and pledged that Vietnam will make activecontributions to the success of this process.
PMDung emphasised the country’s consistent viewpoint of using nuclearenergy only for peaceful purposes, ensuring nuclear safety and securityas well as practically contributing to the international community’sjoint efforts.
He told participants that Vietnam has beenbuilding a legal framework and safe and secure infrastructure fornuclear power application, and taking part in related internationaltreaties and initiatives to effectively implement its commitments,especially after the first Nuclear Security Summit.
Regarding regional cooperation, PM Dung stated that Vietnam isworking actively with other ASEAN member countries to continue boostingthe building of a peaceful and stable Southeast Asian region withoutnuclear weapons.
According to the Vietnameseleader, disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons are themost important factors to reduce risks for nuclear security and safetywhile each country has the legitimate right to use nuclear energy andtechnology for peaceful purposes.
Differences inthis issue should be addressed on the basis of the UN Charter andinternational law through peaceful measures, with regard to thelegitimate interests of each nation, he said.
Thetwo-day summit focused on three important topics for nuclear securityand safety, including reviewing the progress made since the 2010Washington Summit, national measures and international cooperation toenhance nuclear security and future commitment, and the interfacebetween nuclear security and safety.
At the end ofthe summit, the leaders of 53 countries adopted the Seoulcommuniqué, covering a series of measures to ensure nuclear security andsafety in the world.
The third Nuclear Security Summit will be held in the Netherlands in 2014.-VNA
