Vietnam’s efforts to promote gender equality spotlighted

Vietnam’s Vice State President Nguyen Thi Doan highlighted the country’s important steps towards ensuring gender equality, increasing the position and promoting creativity of women.
Vietnam’s Vice State President Nguyen Thi Doan highlighted thecountry’s important steps towards ensuring gender equality, increasingthe position and promoting creativity of women at the opening ceremonyof the 25th Global Summit of Women in Sao Paulo, Brazil on May 14.

Doan also emphasised Vietnamese women’scontributions to the country’s economic development, particularly ineconomic restructuring and growth model transfer.

Regarding challenges facing global women, the Vietnamese officialstressed the importance of strengthening gender equality policies andstrategies, increasing women’s role as well as efforts to improveknowledge and skills.

She called on the summit to support Nepalese women who have been seriously affected during the two recent earthquakes.

Along with the 50,000 USD aid by the Vietnamese Government, theVietnamese delegation to the summit will donate additional 10,000 USD toNepalese women.

At the opening ceremony, VicePresident Doan was presented with the Global Women’s Leadership awardfor her efforts to raise the role of women and her contributions toconnecting Vietnamese female entrepreneurs with others in the world.

Established in 1990, the Global Summit of Women isheld annually to boost female participation in and contributions toglobal socio-economic development, especially in business.

This year’s three-day event has drawn nearly 1,000 delegates from 63 nations and territories across the world.

Also on May 14, the Vietnamese Vice President met Chairman of theCommunist Party of Brazil Renato Rabelo, during which she confirmed thatthe Communist Party of Vietnam wishes to continue intensifyingcooperation with the Brazilian party to further develop and deepen theVietnam-Brazil comprehensive partnership.

Shethanked the Brazilian people for supporting Vietnam, affirming hercountry continually attaches importance to developing its comprehensivepartnership with Brazil – its largest trade partner in Latin America.

The host, in turn, declared that Brazil considersVietnam an important partner in the Asian-Pacific region and hopes forstrengthened collaboration between the two parties in the future.

Both sides exchanged opinions on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Chairman Renato Rabelo supported Vietnam’s stance of settlingdisputes through peaceful negotiations and in accordance withinternational law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on theLaw of the Sea.

The Vietnamese official also metMayor of Sao Paulo Fernando Haddad, saying Vietnam wants to enhance itsties with the city.

The mayor affirmed hiscity’s wish to strengthen multi-faceted cooperation with Vietnam,especially in economics, trade, investment, culture andscience-technology, as well as its willingness to twin with Vietnameselocalities.

He expressed his intention to visit Vietnam to speed up the implementation of these targets.-VNA
