Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam shipped 74,120 tonnes of coffee beans to Algeria in 2018,earning 132.48 million USD, up 56 percent in volume and 28 percent in valuefrom 2017, the General Department of Vietnam Customs reported.
Coffee is the most favourite drink of Algerians, with each consuming more than3kg of coffee annually.
The North African country imports about 130,000 tonnes of coffee beans worth around300 million USD each year. Robustacoffee makes up more than 85 percent of the total import value.
Apart from Vietnam, Ivory Coast, Indonesia, Brazil and Italy are also Algeria’smajor coffee suppliers.
Vietnamese Commercial Counselor to Algeria Hoang Duc Nhuan said Algeria stillhas room for Vietnamese coffee, which is expected to become the country’s topexport item to Algeria. In 2018, Vietnam’s coffee export turnover to Algeriaaccounted for 68 percent of its accumulated export value.
Vietnam is now the world’ssecond largest exporter of coffee beans and the largest robusta exporter.Coffee export accounts for nearly 10 percent of the country’s total shipment ofagro-forestry-fisheries.
The Vietnamese instant coffee is now availablein 70 countries and territories worldwide.
There are 20 instant coffee processing plantsacross the country, having a total capacity of 75,280 tonnes per year, not tomention hundreds of small-scale processing facilities with a total capacity ofaround 70,000 tonnes.-VNA
