Vietnamese diplomats urged to contribute more to foreign policies

National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong on Feb. 2, urged chiefs of 21 overseas diplomatic missions to conduct deeper studies on geopolitical situations in their respective countries to provide consultancy in formulating foreign diplomatic policies.

At the meeting with 21 newly-appointed ambassadors and consuls general,Chairman Trong said Vietnam has never won such high prestige in theworld, politically and economically, like it has today.

Quickly upon finishing its role as a non-permanent member of the UnitedNations Security Council, Vietnam took over the ASEAN presidency.

The National Assembly (NA) of Vietnam has been elected as member of theExecutive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and tookover the presidency of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA).

In this context, Trong said, it is critically important forrepresentatives of Vietnam ’s diplomatic leadership to increaseresearch in their host countries for comprehensive reports providingconsultancy to the State and Party in the policy and strategyformulation process.

As the NA seeks to promote foreign relation activities, Trong said hewanted the ambassadors and consuls general to increase cooperation withNA bodies in order to further improve friendship and cooperationbetween the NA and legislative bodies of other countries andinter-parliamentary agencies in the region and the world.

The diplomats pledged to do their utmost to further the friendship andcooperative relations between Vietnam and foreign countries andinternational organisations. They also vowed to uphold the nationalforeign relation policies of dependency, diversity and multilateralismand care for the welfare of overseas Vietnamese./.
