Kien Giang (VNA) – The Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) and theCambodian Women for Peace and Development (CWPD) organised an exchange in theMekong Delta province of Kien Giang on February 23 to mark the 40th anniversary of the victory of Vietnam’s southwest border defence war and thefall of the genocidal Pol Pot regime.
In her remarks at the event, VWU Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thu Ha recalled the Vietnamesepeople and military’s efforts in the fight to protect the national southwestborder as well as their support for the Cambodian people in liberating thenation from the genocidal regime.
After Phnom Penh was liberated, VWU sent many experts to Cambodia to help Cambodianwomen to consolidate and develop their union during 1979-1988, she added.
Meanwhile, CWPD Vice President Mean Som An said that the historic victory onJanuary 7, 1979 is a joint victory of the people and armies of Vietnam andCambodia, as well as a significant milestone in the Vietnam-Cambodiatraditional relations.
She added that the exchange provided a chance for both sides to look back at history,thus deepening the comprehensive and stable cooperation and soundneighbourliness between the two countries.
On the occasion, the VWU and CWPD presented gifts to former Vietnamesevoluntary soldiers who fought in the Cambodian battlefield. Kien Giangprovince’s leaders presented five scholarships, each worth 1 million VND (43.11USD), to Cambodian students who are studying at Kien Giang University. -VNA
