The 10th Party Congress of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA) concluded in Hanoi on September 24 after three and a half working days, setting up major missions through 2020.
Politburo member and Vice Secretary of the Central Military Commission Phung Quang Thanh, who is also the Minister of National Defence, said the congress scrutinised and gave feedback on the Central Military Commission’s political and review reports along with the Party Central Committee’s draft documents to be submitted to the 12th National Party Congress slated for early 2016.
The VPA’s Party Congress also approved its resolution which defines key missions for the VPA’s Party organisation in the future, including thoroughly internalising the resolution of the upcoming 12 th National Party Congress, the resolution of the 11th Party Central Committee’s eighth meeting on the national protection strategy, as well as other Party resolutions and directions and the State’s policies and laws.
The resolution stated that the VPA’s Party organisation also needs to step up the building of a People’s Army that is revolutionary, regular, elite and increasingly modern, serving as the backbone of a strong people-based defence. The army must stick to a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance and peaceful settlement of disputes while making active and precise forecasts.
It also underlined the VPA’s determination to successfully handle arising incidents; firmly safeguard the national independence, sovereignty, unification and territorial integrity; ensure political stability and a peaceful environment for national development; and protect the Party, State, people and socialist regime’s protection.
In the next five years, the army’s Party organisation will accelerate international integration and defence external relations in order to raise the stature and prestige of Vietnam and the army in the global arena, the resolution stressed.
The congress drew the attendance of 450 delegates representing hundreds of thousands of Party members in the VPA.-VNA
