Vietnamese Ambassador visits US Naval Postgraduate School

Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Pham Quang Vinh visited the US Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California, in early April at the invitation of the US Navy.

Washington DC (VNA) – VietnameseAmbassador to the US Pham Quang Vinh visited the US Naval Postgraduate School(NPS) in Monterey, California, in early April at the invitation of the US Navy.

During the trip, the ambassador held a meetingwith Congressman Jimmy Panetta, and NPS President Ronald Route and deans of NPSfaculties.

The sides appreciated recent development inVietnam – US relations and highlighted the successful visits to the US by PrimeMinister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and to Vietnam by President Donald Trump. They also tooknoted of progress in bilateral security – defence ties as seen through the tripsmade by Vietnamese Defence Minister Ngo Xuan Lich to the US, and by US DefenceMinister Jame Mattis and aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinsonto Vietnam.

The Vietnamese diplomat informed his hostson socio-economic development, reform achievements, and diplomatic policies ofVietnam, saying that he expects bilateral ties to grow stronger, particularlyin naval exchanges and cooperation. He also voiced his support for cooperationbetween the naval school and its Vietnamese partners.

NPS President Ronald Route lauded the firstvisit of the diplomat to his school.

Introducing the NPS’s educational strengthsin the fields of IT, management, naval capacity building, and defence, Routesaid the school has worked with 110 countries worldwide on naval capacityenhancement.

He said the NPS want to discuss withVietnam cooperation in training in both short and long terms in such fields asnaval security, peacekeeping, cyber-security, and search & rescue mission.

Congressman Panetta shared his impressionof the development of Vietnam – US Strategic Partnership in recent years and theenhanced role of Vietnam in the region.

He said he wants bilateral ties to bestrengthened across such sectors as education-training, trade, agriculture, andscience-technology.

During his time at the school, AmbassadorVinh engaged in a talk with teachers and students at the international studiesdepartment, with discussion revolving around Vietnam – US ties, Vietnamese andUS diplomacies in the region, the ASEAN, and regional security problems,including the East Sea issue.

Founded in 1909, the NPS is a graduateuniversity offering master’s and doctoral degrees in more than 70 fields ofstudy to members of the US Armed Forces, and international partners. On anaverage annual basis, the establishment trains about 2,400 students. -VNA
