Hanoi (VNA) – Six Vietnamese students won five silver and one bronzemedals at the 2017 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO), an onlineprogramming competition hosted by Australia on May 13, the Ministry ofEducation and Training announced on June 6.
The silver medals were won by 12th graders from Hanoi, Ha Tinhprovince, Thua Thien-Hue province, Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho city. An 11th grader in Hanoi also won a silver.
Vietnam was ranked seventh out of 30 countries and territories attending thecompetition.
Last year, the country finished fifth with one gold, two silver and threebronze medals.
The APIO is an online contest for the Asian Pacific region. The tasks aresimilar to those in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) and focuson designing algorithms.
The contest is held online, with students competing at contest sites withintheir own country or area.
Thisyear, prizes were considered for 164 standout students in the region, 84 ofwhom brought home medals.
The competition was first held by the Australian IOI team in 2007.-VNA
