Vietnam vows to promote social development

Vietnamese Ambassador LeHoai Trung, head of the Vietnamese mission to the UN, made thecommitment at the third Committee of the 68 th Session of the UNGeneral Assembly on Agenda item 27: Social Development in New Yorkon October 7-8.

“As the 2015 deadline for therealisation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) approaches andthe international community is working to define the post-2015development agenda, there is an urgent need for the internationalcommunity to take prompt and effective actions to deal with unemploymentand social inequality, and ensure social protection,” he said.

Development experience in every country shows that in designing thepost-2015 development agenda, adequate attention must be paid to theissues related to growth and the establishment of a favorableinternational trade and financial environment, he added.

Applauding the achievements made by countries in realising MDGs, Trungnoted that there remain serious social challenges with enormouscomplexity and consequences.

He also highlightedVietnam ’s achievements in promoting and ensuring the rights of thedisabled and elderly as well as its efforts to create jobs for youngpeople.

The diplomat also reaffirmed his country’scommitment to the Copenhagen Declaration and Program of Action, and theinitiatives adopted by the General Assembly at its 24th special session.

At the debate, participants voiced concern aboutnegative impacts of the global financial crisis, rising food prices andclimate change on efforts to reduce poverty and generate jobs, thusaffecting the fulfillment of the MDGs.-VNA

Tien Giang strives to reduce poverty rate to 0.87% this year
