Vietnam, US seek stronger parliamentary ties

Washington, D.C. (VNA) –
Ambassador ofVietnam to the US Pham Quang Vinh and US Congressman Mac Thornberry, Chairmanof the House Armed Services Committee, talked about increasing parliamentaryexchanges during their meeting in Washington on June 20.

Thornberry highlighted the strong development ofthe Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership over the past time, includingcooperation in security-defense.

He recalled the good impression of his visit toVietnam in May 2017 and emphasized on promoting parliamentary exchanges in thetime ahead.

He also recognized Vinh’s significantcontributions over the past three years to enhancing the rapports betweenVietnam and the US.

For his part,Ambassador Vinh affirmed that Vietnam always attaches great importance tocooperation with the US, including parliamentary ties and locality-to-localitycollaboration.

The two sides also discussed regional andinternational issues of mutual concerns such as strengthening cooperation withthe Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and making contributions toensuring peace, security and prosperity in the region, particularly navigationsecurity, safety and freedom.

Earlier on June 18, Ambassador Vinh met former USDefence Secretary Chuck Hagel to discuss remarkable strides in Vietnam-USrelations.

They agreed that the development of the partnershipframework has created a momentum for stronger collaboration in all fields suchas security-defence, addressing war aftermaths, and cooperation in regionalissues of mutual concerns.

Ambassador Vinh thanked the former defensesecretary for his sentiment towards Vietnam as well as his active contributionsto the enhancement of Vietnam-US ties. -VNA
