Vietnam, US beef up cooperation in war consequence settlement

Hanoi (VNA) - DeputyMinister of National Defence Sen. Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh onApril 8 hosted a reception for outgoing US Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel J. Kritenbrink,during which the two sides discussed cooperationplans in war consequence settlement.

Vinh, who is also head of the standing office of the National SteeringCommittee on the Settlement of Post-war Unexploded Ordnance and Toxic ChemicalConsequences (Steering Committee 701) ofVietnam, praised the diplomat for his contributions to bilateral cooperation ingeneral and overcoming war aftermath in particular.

He congratulated Kritenbrinkon his appointment as Assistant Secretary ofState for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, suggesting him continue to supportand promote the US Congress and Government to increase assistance to Vietnam insettling war consequences.

The Vietnamese Party, Government and Ministry of National Defence always considerwar consequence settlement as a priority in cooperation with the US in the timeto come, the Deputy Minister said.

Vinh expressed his hope that relevant authorities of the US will continue towork closely with Steering Committee 701 to implement ongoing cooperation projectseffectively and on schedule, as well as enhance the communication work in orderto highlight the humanitarian significance of the cooperation between the twosides in this field.

For his part, Kritenbrink expressed his satisfactionat the results that the two sides have achieved in overcoming war consequencesin Vietnam, saying that these are in line with the commitment of senior Vietnameseand US leaders, and helping to strengthen political trust between the twocountries.

The diplomat also pledged to continue supporting Vietnam in this regard in the comingtime.

The two sides highly valued recent results in overcoming war consequences inVietnam, including searching for US soldiers missing inaction, removing bombs, mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO), and detoxifying dioxin-pollutedareas through dioxindetoxification projects at Da Nang and Bien Hoa airports.

The cooperation has created a foundation for bilateral collaboration in otherfields, as well as promoted trust between the two countries, they said./.
