Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam is bound to suspend the import of raw cotton from Ghana as dozens of cotton containers from this African country were contaminated with a pest species subject to Vietnam’s plant quarantine.

The suspension decision was recently issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. It will take effect after 60 days from October 11.

From July 2 to September 26, 58 containers of raw cotton weighing about 1,384 tonnes imported from Ghana through Hai Phong port were found to be contaminated with live khapra beetles ( Trogoderma granarium everts), which is subject to plant quarantine in Vietnam, said the ministry’s Department of Plant Protection.

The ministry ordered this department strictly examine raw cotton hailing from Ghana pending the decision’s enforcement. Meanwhile, the department must also send official information to Ghana’s competent agencies so that they can have thorough remedies.-VNA
