HCM City (VNA) – Ho Chi Minh City on August 11 celebrated the 40th anniversary of Vietnam-Thailand diplomatic ties (August 6, 1976- 2016).

Speaking at the event, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Le Thanh Liem spoke highly of the fruitful relations between the two countries over the past four decades, particularly after they lifted their relations to a strategic partnership in 2013.

He highlighted that Thailand has always been one of Vietnam’s most important partners in the Southeast Asian region in particular and Asia in general. The establishment of the ASEAN Community in late 2015 is a strong ground the two countries to boost economic cooperation in the time ahead.

He went on to say that the southern metropolis, which is known for its open door policies, always welcomes and creates the best possible conditions for delegations, enterprises and people of the neighboring country to the city, adding that the city will actively support the General Consulate of Thailand in effectively implementing cooperation programmes, helping to deepen the bilateral special bonds.

For her part, Thai Consul General to HCM City Ureerat Ratanaprukre said the two countries’ relations have prospered with significant progress made over the past 40 years, while pledging to do her utmost to intensify the bilateral ties.

Trade between the HCM City and Thailand reached 2.3 billion USD in 2015. Thailand is one of the 15 biggest foreign investors in the city. As of June 2016, the city was home to 161 Thai projects with a total investment of nearly 260 million USD.-VNA
