Vietnam, South Sudan establish diplomatic ties

Vietnam and South Sudan signed a joint communiqué on establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries at the headquarters of Vietnam’s permanent mission to the United Nations (UN) in New York on February 21.

Hanoi (VNA) - 
Vietnam andSouth Sudan signed a joint communiqué on establishing diplomatic relations betweenthe two countries at the headquarters of Vietnam’s permanent mission to theUnited Nations (UN) in New York on February 21.

The signatories were Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy,head of Vietnam’s mission to the UN, and Ambassador Akuei Bona Malwal, head ofSouth Sudan’s mission to the UN.

The two sides agreed to exchange diplomaticrepresentatives at the ambassadorial level and apply the 1961 Vienna Conventionon Diplomatic Relations.

With the establishment of diplomatic ties withSouth Sudan, Vietnam now has diplomatic relations with 54 out of the 55countries in Africa.

The joint communiqué was sent to UNSecretary-General Antonio Guterres to circulate as an official document of theUN and inform other member states.

After the signing ceremony, the two ambassadorsheld a meeting on the promotion of cooperation between the two countries inbilateral and multilateral issues.

The two sides agreed to enhance collaboration inthe fields of their strengths such as agriculture, banking, oil and gas.

South Sudan pledged to support Vietnam’s bid tobecome a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021tenure.

The same day, the two ambassadors co-chaired abanquet with the attendance of nearly 40 ambassadors and heads of permanentrepresentative missions and representatives of the UN Secretariat.-VNA
