Vietnam set to continue joining UN-REDD projects

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment PhamKhoi Nguyen made the commitment while meeting with UN-REDD DirectorYern Katerere on the sidelines of the 15th UN Climate Change Conferencein Copenhagen, Denmark, on Dec. 12.

Nguyen spoke highly of UN-REDD’s grant of 4.5 million USD to supportVietnam ’s efforts in improving the forestry sector’s capacity andplanting 5 million hectares of forest.

The minister said Vietnam needs more assistance from UN-REDD and otherinternational organisations in afforestation and forest managementwhich are considered as one of the nation’s major tasks in realisingthe National Target Programme on Climate Change.

Katerere applauded Vietnam’s cooperation and participation in UN-REDDprojects and pledged to help the country seek more funding in thisfield in the coming time.

Vietnam is one of nine countries around the world chosen by UN-REDD tocarry out its project on a trial basis. The country plans to set up aUN-REDD network across the country following the test period, whichrequires up to 12 million USD./.
