Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRCS) has sent the second batchof urgent aid worth over 870 million VND (37,900 USD) to victims of recentfloods and landslides in the two northern mountainous provinces of Lai Chau andHa Giang.
Accordingly,the organisation offered 210 million VND in cash for 70 families whose houseswere swept away or collapsed, along with 240 boxes of goods and 600 personalhygiene kits.
Earlieron June 25, the VRCS presented assistance worth 250 million VND to families ofvictims who were dead or injured during the floods in the two provinces.
Accordingto the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control,as of June 28 morning, the death toll in floods and landslides triggered bytorrential rains in northern mountainous provinces on June 23-26 reached 23, while10 others went missing.
In Lai Chau alone, 16 people were killed, ninewent missing and 15 were injured.
Total economiclosses are estimated to reach about 458.7 billion VND (19.9 million USD), withLai Chau being the hardest hit with damages amounting to 338 billion VND.
People in LaiChau province have continued to receive support from organisations and agenciesto overcome losses in recent floods and landslides.
Lai Chau todate has received about 2.3 billion VND from donors across the country. Of theamount, one billion VND came from Ho Chi Minh City, 300 million VND from the Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agribank). Dien Bien and Son La provinces also offered200 million VND each.
The provincehas decided to present 35 million VND for each family losing their home and 15million VND for each household whose house was damaged.
The VietnamFatherland Front chapter in Lai Chau and local authorities are responsible forthe prompt distribution of the aid to people in need.-VNA
