Vietnam pays heed to legal aid for the poor

The Vietnamese Government has made great efforts in completing the legal system and organizing law enforcement to provide the best conditions for the poor and vulnerable groups to engage in political, socio-economic and cultural activities.

Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnamese Government has made great efforts incompleting the legal system and organising law enforcement to provide the bestconditions for the poor and vulnerable groups to engage in political,socio-economic and cultural activities.

The statement was made by Deputy Minister of Justice Nguyen Khanh Ngoc at aforum co-held by the Ministry of Justice and the Delegation of the EuropeanUnion to Vietnam on December 13 in Hanoi.

He stressed that takingcare of and protecting the poor and vulnerable people is always a priority ofVietnam’s socio-economic development policy.

The 2013 Constitutionand numerous laws enforced by the country reflect the country’s consistentviewpoint of promoting and protecting human rights, especially the rights andinterests of poor people and vulnerable groups, he said.

Head of the EU delegation Bruno Angelet said the policy dialogue between thejustice ministry and the delegation was an important mechanism to improvetransparency in judicial activities.

With more than 20 years of cooperation between the two sides in legal affairs,the EU delegation confirmed its commitment to supporting Vietnam in developingpublic services with an emphasis on the inclusion of the people, civil groupsand the private sector.

UN Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme ResidentRepresentative to Vietnam Kamal Malhotra stressed the importance of providinglegal support to poor people and vulnerable groups as their ability to affordlegal consults is often limited. Malhotra said Vietnam’s revised Law on LegalAid has set the foundation to assist poor people and vulnerable groups toaccess legal aid and more public services.

During the forum, which has been an annual exchange between Vietnam and itsinternational partners since 2004, more than 120 delegates and experts sharedinsights and experience in domestic and international practices in securinglegal aid and the implementation of the laws to protect and support poor peopleand vulnerable groups.-VNA
