A roundtable on climate change and security was held in The Hague of the Netherlands on December 4 to exchange information and assess models, measures and experience in ensuring environmental security and climate change response.

Hanoi (VNA) – A roundtable on climate change and security was held in TheHague of the Netherlands on December 4 to exchange information and assessmodels, measures and experience in ensuring environmental security and climatechange response.

The8th edition of the roundtable, held by the Embassy of Vietnam in theNetherlands, in cooperation with the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education,drew various local officials, representatives of diplomatic corps, and membersof research institutes, non-governmental organisations and scholars across theworld.

Theannual event aims to bolster international cooperation and strategy sharing totackle challenges of climate change, including natural disasters and eachnation’s response capacity. It also sought new initiatives and measures tosubmit policy recommendations to the United Nations and the EuropeanCommission.

This year’s event was more significant as it followed the opening of the 24thConference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on ClimateChange (COP24) in Poland.

Speakingat the roundtable, Vietnamese Ambassador to the Netherlands Ngo Thi Hoaunderlined Vietnam’s role and efforts in activities to counter climate changeimpacts over the years.

Co-chairof the roundtable Matt Luna and President of Dutch Institute for EnvironmentalSecurity Wouter Veening affirmed that Vietnam holds an important geopoliticalposition in strategies against climate change.

Vietnameseand Dutch experts presented issues related to climate change and watermanagement, including cooperation in the Mekong River, impacts of climatechange on periods of disasters, and food security.

An inter-ministerial delegation ofVietnam delivered the country’s cooperation plans and strategies on climatechange response in the coming time. -VNA
