Hanoi (VNA) – Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh on August 25presented the Friendship Order to History Professor Odon Vallet from theworld-renowned Sorbonne University in France.
TheFrench-born Vallet was honoured in recognition of his contributions to bringingstudy opportunities to Vietnamese pupils and students through the ValletScholarship Programme as well as promoting Vietnam-France relations.
She said Vallet scholarships have become a source of encouragement toVietnamese students in the past years and expected the French professor to furtherhis support for Vietnam in education development and children healthcare andprotection.
Expressing his honour to receive Vietnam’s noblest order for foreigners, OdonVallet underlined that he will continue to present scholarships in fields ofscience-technology, mathematics, chemistry and biology to Vietnamesedisadvantaged pupils and students in mountainous, remote, border and islandareas.
Many of the Vallet scholarship recipients have received the world’s scientificawards, he added.
From 1990, through the Aid to the Children of Vietnam (AEVN) in France, OdonVallet made financial contributions to repairing and upgrading SOS Children’sVillage in Lam Dong, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Binh and Nghe An.
In 1999, he set up the Vallet Scholarship fund for high-achieving students inFrance, Vietnam and Bennin (Germany). The funding is drawn from the professor’spersonal inheritance from his father, once a poor labourer who made his fortunefrom the insurance business. To date, nearly 30,000 scholarships have beengiven to Vietnamese students with a total money mounting to 150 billion VND(6.6 million USD).-VNA
