Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam and China on May 8 jointlyreleased aquatic resources into the Tonkin Gulf at the border gate of thecross-border Bac Luan (Beilun) River in Dongxing city, the Guangxi ZhuangAutonomous Region of China.

They released 43 million fry of eight species,including ca song (Epinephelinae), ca trap do (Pagrus major), ca trap den(Sparus macrocephalus), ca hong do (Lutjanus erythropterus), and ca hong bac(Lutjanus argentimaculatus Forskal).

This was an activity to implement the memorandumof understanding on bilateral cooperation in releasing and protecting aquaticresources, signed between the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and RuralDevelopment and the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture on January 12, 2017.

Nguyen Ngoc Oai, Acting Director General of theVietnamese ministry’s Directorate of Fisheries, said this activity aimed toreduce the degradation of aquatic resources in the Tonkin Gulf, accelerate therecovery of these resources, help increase economic benefits from fisheries andfishermen’s income, and raise public awareness of fishery resources protection.

In Vietnam, the release of fry has receivedattention from the fisheries sector and warm response from localities. It is anannual activity conducted nationwide, he noted.

Chinese Deputy Minister of Agriculture YuKangzhen said the sustainable development of the common fishing ground in theTonkin Gulf is critically important to Vietnam and China. The two countriesjointly released fish fry for the first time one year ago.

He expressed his belief that with both sides’joint efforts, the Tokin Gulf will become a “common beautiful garden” of thecountries’ fishermen, and their fisheries cooperation will be promoted, thusgenerating practical benefits and enhancing the two peoples’ friendship.

In 2000, the Governments of Vietnam and Chinainked the Agreement on the Delimitation of the Tonkin Gulf and the Agreement onFishery Cooperation in the Tonkin Gulf, which properly delimit fisheryproduction areas in the waters.

After the signing, the two sides set up theVietnam-China Joint Fishery Committee, which has helped to ensure smoothfishery cooperation in the Tonkin Gulf.-VNA
