NewYork (VNA) – Vietnam supports Palestinian’s righteous fight fortheir inviolable rights, stated Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of Vietnam'sPermanent Mission to the UN.
Hemade the statement at the Security Council’squarterly open debate on the Middle East and the Israel/Palestine conflict,which took place on January 22.
Speaking at the discussion, the diplomat said despite efforts madeby the UN Security Council and other UN bodies last year, the situation seemsto have gotten worse.
He pointed to rampant and excessive use of violence and the highestrate in five years of related injuries and deaths among civilians as examples.The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the NearEast (UNRWA) is facing a budget crisis, he added.
Quy attributed these problems to a lack of respect for, even violationof, the UN Security Council’s relevant resolutions, particularly Resolution2334, which condemned the Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories asillegal.
He affirmed that Vietnam backs the two-state solution, whichendorses an independent state of Palestine co-existing peacefully alongsideIsrael following the border that was internationally recognised prior to 1967.
The ambassador urged sides involved to respect international law,the Security Council’s related resolutions and to settle the issue by peacefulmeasures in line with the UN Charter.
He urged the council to demonstrate its strong leadership forspecific actions and the sides involved to ensure their compliance to thecouncil’s related resolutions in a bid to end violence and damage to civilians,and help reach a comprehensive, fair and sustainable solution that cares for thelegitimate interests of all parties.-VNA
