Moscow (VNA) – A high-ranking military delegationof Vietnam is attending the eighth Moscow Conference on International Securitythat opened in the Russian capital on April 24.
The delegation is led by Sen. Lt. Gen. Phan VanGiang – Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army and DeputyMinister of National Defence. They are among more than 1,000 delegates from 111countries and international organisations to the event.
The conference from April 23 to 25 focuses oncurrent security challenges and threats at global and regional levels,terrorist threats, new approaches and cooperation in military and regionalsecurity in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
The Vietnamese delegation will attend all thefour plenums and four special sessions of the event.
At the opening ceremony, Secretary of Russia’sSecurity Council Nikolai Patrushev read out President Vladimir Putin’sgreetings to the conference.
In his message, Putin said the conference bringstogether heads of defence agencies, representativesof the supreme commands of the armed forces, headsof international organisations and leading experts from differentcountries to discuss the most acute problems and challenges thatthe international community is facing. The high interestin the forum is confident proof of its statusas a respected and widely recognised international discussionplatform in the field of security.
This year, the focus will beon a number of highly relevant current issues, includingassistance in restoring and normalising life in Syriaand Iraq after the defeat of terrorist groups, as wellas development prospects for Africa and the Middle East.
In the greetings, the Russian President showshis belief that this conference will be held in a constructivemanner, serve as a weighty contributionto the consolidation of efforts in the fight againstterrorism and extremism, in resolving regional conflictsand ensuring global security, and in carrying out highlyrelevant peacekeeping missions.
Participants in the opening ceremony also heardspeeches delivered by Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, Russian ForeignMinister Sergei Lavrov, Secretary General of the Shanghai CooperationOrganisation Vladimir Norov, and UN Under-Secretary-General forPeacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix.
The speeches underlined growing global andregional security challenges. They shared the view that only cooperation in theconstructive and united spirit can resolve the problems.-VNA
