Vietnam attends IPU-UN parliamentary hearing

NewYork (VNA) - Head of the NA’sCommittee for External Relations Nguyen Van Giau is leading a Vietnamesedelegation to attend the 2019 Parliamentary Hearing – Emerging Challenges toMultilateralism between the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the UN, whichopened on February 21 at the UN Headquarters.

Speaking at the event, Giau appreciated efforts of the UN in maintaining peace,global security and development of nations, stressing that Vietnam willcontinue joining actively, proactively and responsibly in activities of the twoorganisations.

He said that nations, especially big countries, need tomaintain strong political commitments, take concrete actions onmultilateralism, respect order based on rules and fundamental principles of theUN Chapter, abide by and implement UN resolutions and programmes in a fair,equal and responsible way.

Giau expressed his hope that the UN will be further reformed inthe coming time, and it will build standards for new fields related to theenvironment, aerospace and water security, as well as pay due attention to developingcountries.

Regarding IPU activities, Giau said the organization needs to work closely withmember parliaments to implement its recommendations, and join the UN, regionaland sub-regional organizations to continue building solutions to strengthentrust, promote preventive diplomacy, seek sustainable solutions to prolongedconflicts, prevent arms races and spread of weapons of mass destruction, thus contributing to maintainingpeace in the world.

He said Vietnam has promoted international integration comprehensively anddeeply across fields.

According to Giau, since joining the UN in 1977, Vietnam has always been anactive member, and was elected to the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council,the International Law Commission, the Human Rights Council of the UN, and the UN Educational, Scientific and CulturalOrganization(UNESCO). The nation is also participating in UNpeacekeeping activities.

The Vietnamese National Assembly, a member of the IPU for the past 40 years,has participated responsibly and actively in activities of the organization,contributed to the amendment of the IPU’s charter and regulation, and waselected to the IPU Executive Board in  the 2016-2019 term.

On February 22, the Vietnamese delegation joins discussion sessions on issuesof promoting responsible global governance, reforming the UN General Assembly, roleand contribution of parliaments in promoting solutions to prevent, resolveconflicts and preserve peace more efficiently. The hearing will close on thesame day.-VNA
