Vietnam active at UN high-level meeting for trade facilitation

Vietnam made an active contribution to the success of an UN meeting for the Euro-Asia region on improving cooperation on transit, trade facilitation and the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.

Hanoi (VNA) –Vietnam has made an active contribution to the success of the UN high-levelmeeting for the Euro-Asia region on improving cooperation on transit, tradefacilitation and the 2030 agenda for sustainable development that took place inHanoi on March 7-9.

At a press conferenceafter the meeting closed on March 9, Vu Quang Minh, Director of the EconomicAffairs Department and Assistant to the Foreign Minister, said Vietnam hasactively cooperated with the UN Office of the High Representative forthe Least Developed Countries, Landlocked DevelopingCountries and the Small Island Developing States to build the agendaof the meeting.

During the three-dayevent, Vietnamese delegates participated in most debates and shared Vietnam’sexperience in realising sustainable development goals, developing infrastructureconnections, harmonising customs procedures and strengthening partnership withdeveloping countries, landlocked countries, donor organisations and transitnations.

Minh expressed hishope that the recommendations and outcomes of the meeting will help promotetraffic connection and international economic development.

For his part, GyanChandra Acharya, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative forthe Least Developed Countries, Landlocked DevelopingCountries and the Small Island Developing States, underlined thatissues tabled at the meeting such as trading, transits, regional connectivity,transport, customs cooperation, economic restructuring with the support ofinternational community are crucial for landlocked, transit countries topromote win-win regional cooperation.

Participants sharedtheir experience in improving infrastructure facilities, developing the economyand promoting trade facilitation, thus making clear the meeting’s message andfuture orientations as well as action plans to implement the outcomes of themeeting.

The nations in theregion can promote their economic development by working closely with otherregional nations and seeking support from the international community forcapacity building, technology and trade and investment, Gyan Chandra Acharyasaid.

He also expressed hishope that the outcomes of the meeting will be integrated into the agenda of theAPEC 2017 and other world forums.

The UN Under SecretaryGeneral highlighted the role of Vietnam in the East – West Economic Corridor,saying that development of traffic infrastructure facilities will contribute toenhancing international trade and competitive of the country in the region andthe world.

With its strategiclocation in the region, Vietnam should develop highways and railways to assistwith trade facilitation and connectivity with regional nations, he added.

The outcomes of the meetingwill be the important input for Vietnam to include in the priorities of APEC Vietnam2017, Minh said.

The UN high-levelmeeting for the Euro-Asia region on improving cooperation on transit, tradefacilitation and the 2030 agenda for sustainable development attracted 150delegates from 40 nations and 20 international organisations.-VNA
