Hanoi (VNA) – Charles Jackson, a US veteran and prisoner during the war inVietnam, expressed his wish to find his war-time rescuers during a meeting withthe Vietnam-US Society (VUS) on January 11.
NguyenTam Chien, Chairman of the VUS said he hopes that Jackson’s return to Vietnamwill help him understand more about the country.
Vietnam-USbilateral relations have reached new heights and developed in politics,economy, trade, culture and education. People-to-people exchanges between thetwo countries need to be further promoted, including war relief activities,Chien added.
Healso hopes that cooperation between the VUS and US veterans will be acceleratedin the future, helping to strengthen Vietnam-US relations.
Inthe meeting, Jackson said that he wants to meet and thank the people in Muong Giocommune of the northern province of Son La and warders of Hoa Lo prison, whotreated him kindly during his detention.
Jackson’splane was shot down in Muong Gio on June 24, 1972. He was arrested by localmilitia and then transferred to Hoa Lo prison in Hanoi. The former pilot thenwas returned to the US after the Paris agreement on ending the war in Vietnamsigned on January 27, 1973.-VNA
