US to promote comprehensive partnership with Vietnam: President Trump

Hanoi (VNA) – Party General Secretary and President of Vietnam Nguyen PhuTrong had talks in Hanoi on February 27 with US President Donald Trump, whosaid his country will continue cooperating with Vietnam to promote thesubstantive development of the countries’ comprehensive partnership.

The host leader welcomed President Trump’s visitalong with the US and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)’s decisionto choose Vietnam as the venue for their second summit.

He affirmed Vietnam’s foreign policy ofindependence, self-reliance, multilateralisation and diversification of foreignrelations, and active integration into the world in the principle of respectingone another’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and politicalregimes. 

He also reiterated the country’s consistentviewpoint of treasuring the comprehensive partnership with the US.

Party General Secretary and President Trong expressedhis delight at the positive and comprehensive progress in the Vietnam-USrelations, which has helped bring practical benefits to the countries’ people.

He appreciated the US’s cooperation ineconomy-trade, education, and settlement of war consequences, especiallycommencing the environmental remediation of dioxin contamination in Bien Hoaairport and other dioxin contaminated areas.

The two countries should push ahead withcooperation in other fields like unexploded ordnance clearance and support forAgent Orange victims, the host added.

For his part, President Trump said he isimpressed by the hospitality of local people and the development of Vietnam. Hethanked the country for its thorough preparations for the US-DPRK summit in ashort period of time.

The two leaders shared the view that theircountries need to maintain high-level meetings and delegation exchanges andconsolidate existing dialogue mechanisms. They voiced their support for furthercooperation in addressing war consequences, including the remediation of dioxincontamination in Bien Hoa airport.

They also agreed to foster mutually beneficialpartnerships in economy, trade, and investment.

Discussing regional and international issues ofcommon concern, General Secretary and President Trong affirmed that Vietnamstrongly supports the dialogue process towards the denuclearisation andlong-term peace in the Korean Peninsula.

President Trump said the US will continueplaying an active role in the Indo-Pacific region so as to help maintain a rules-basedorder and promote peace, stability, cooperation, and development in thisimportant region.

On this occasion, he invited the Party GeneralSecretary and President of Vietnam to pay an official visit to the US this yearto continue discussing measures to intensify the comprehensive partnership.

Following the talks, the two leaders witnessedthe signing of several economic cooperation documents worth over 21 billion USDin total.-VNA
