US-supported deworming campaign reaches over 900,000 kids

According to the US Embassy’s pressrelease, from May 5 to June 4, the US Agency for InternationalDevelopment (USAID) joined Vietnam's National Institute of Malariology,Parasitology and Entomology (NIMPE) of the Ministry of Health (MoH) todistribute medicine to children living in the 10 provinces of Bac Giang,Cao Bang, Dien Bien, Ha Giang, Ha Nam, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Nam Dinh, SonLa and Thanh Hoa.

“The deworming programmesupported by USAID has been very successful,” said NIMPE Director TranThanh Duong, adding that more than half of the children have shown nosigns of worms over the time and a significant reduction in malnutritionwas reported in these provinces.

BetweenNovember 2011 and September 2013, USAID is funding mass drugadministration campaigns for children and women of reproductive age in17 provinces where the MoH has identified gaps in deworming drugcoverage.

Mass drug administration campaigns arebeing conducted in partnership with World Vision Australia , which isdonating the drugs. USAID covers all transport and other logisticalcosts.

Last year, over 882,000 school-aged children in 12 provinces received the drugs.

Since 2000, USAID has provided 595 million USD for development and relief efforts in Vietnam.-VNA
