US defence secretary to visit Vietnam

US Secretary of Defence Ashton Carter will pay an official visit to Vietnam from May 31 to June 2 at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart Phung Quang Thanh.

The two ministerswill discuss how to enhance bilateral defence cooperation as well asregional and international issues of mutual concern, Foreign MinistrySpokesman Le Hai Binh said during a regular press conference held inHanoi on May 28.

Vietnam and the USestablished diplomatic ties in 1995. The comprehensive partnershipestablished during State President Truong Tan Sang’s visit to the US inJuly 2013 has created a framework for reinforcing the two countries’affiliation in various fields, such as politics, the economy, security,maritime capacity, climate change response and environmental protection,education, and human rights.-VNA
