UN relevant agencies support Vietnam in peacekeeping mission

The United Nations relevant agencies such as the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and the Department of Field Support (DFS) are hoped to assist Vietnam with conducting peacekeeping activities and enhancing the capacity of the Vietnam Peacekeeping Centre moving forward.

During the meeting between VietnameseDefence Minister General Phung Quang Thanh and UN Under-SecretaryGeneral for Peacekeeping Operations Herve Ladsous in Hanoi on June10, the two sides discussed cooperation orientations such as increasingthe participation of Vietnamese officers in UN peacekeeping missions andopening short-and long-term training courses in the field.

Under-Secretary General Herve Ladsous said his ongoing visit toVietnam is designed to share experience and increase UN assistance toVietnam in preparation for peacekeeping activities.

Minister Thanh underlined the significance of the visit which tookplace in the context of Vietnam ’s strong commitment to actively joinUN peacekeeping missions and global efforts to build a world of peaceand prosperity.

He thanked the UN for its support toVietnam since the country joined UN peacekeeping missions last year,saying the two sides have sent delegations to exchange issues relatingto preparations for and implementation of peacekeeping activities.

Vietnam in particular has seen positive outcomes in legal procedures,training, logistics and technical work, external affairs, internationalcooperation and building capacity for the Vietnam Peacekeeping Centre,he said.-VNA
