Evacuation in Myanmar (Source: EPA/VNA) New York (VNA) – United Nations Secretary GeneralAntonio Guterres has warned of a looming humanitarian catastrophe in westernMyanmar due to recent violent conflicts in Rakhine state that forced 18,500 toevacuate to Bangladesh and left more than 100 dead.
On September 1, a UN spokesperson said the Secretary Generalurged parties concerned to exercise restraint.
Earlier on August 30, the UN Security Council convened aclosed-door meeting to discuss violence in Rakhine state, but there is not anyformal statement on the crisis.
British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft, who requested themeeting, said there are calls from council members for de-escalation.
