Tra Vinh province has first new-style rural district

Tra Vinh (VNA) – Tieu Can district has become thefirst district-level locality in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh to berecognised as a new-style rural area.

A ceremony was held on April 29 to announce thePrime Minister’s decision on the recognition.

Chairman of the Tieu Can People’s Committee TranHoang Khai said the district has nine communes and two townships with apopulation of more than 112,000, about 31 percent of whom are Khmer ethnics.Agriculture forms the largest part of the local economy.

Implementing the national target programme onnew-style rural area building, Tieu Can district has gained a facelift when allroads linking communes and hamlets have been paved with asphalt or concrete,and the irrigation system has been upgraded to better serve agriculturalactivities. Up to 98 percent of local households have accessed electricity andclean water.

Per capita income in the district reached 42.1million VND (over 1,800 USD) in 2018, up 2.5-fold from 2011 – when the nationaltarget programme began. The household poverty rate was brought down to 2.31percent last year, dropping by 18.9 percent from 2011.

At the ceremony, Chairman of the Tra VinhPeople’s Committee Dong Van Lam said over the last eight years, the provincehas obtained many encouraging outcomes in building new-style countryside.

By the end of 2018, 40 of the 85 communes in Tra Vinh had been recognised asnew-style rural areas, and two of the nine district-level localities had earnedthe status.

The national target programme on new-style ruralarea building, launched in 2010, sets 20 criteria aiming to boost thedevelopment of rural areas across Vietnam.

According to the central coordination office forthe programme, Vietnam will complete the programme’s target for 2016-2020 bythe end of the second quarter of 2019, with at least half of all communescompleting all criteria.

About 46.48 percent or 4,144 of all communeshave been recognised as new-style rural areas. In addition, 61 districts havewon the title.-VNA
