Hanoi (VNA)– National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan hosted a reception for DirectorGeneral Irina Bokova of the United Nations Educational Scientific and CulturalOrganisation (UNESCO) in Hanoi on August 25.

With the motto ofbeing a trust-worthy friend and partner as well as a responsible member of theinternational community, Vietnam will continue proactively and activelyparticipating in UNESCO’s work in the hope of making more contributions to theorganisation, stated the top legislator.

The NA leader noted  with pleasure the growing relations betweenVietnam and UNESCO over the past years, stating that many UNESCO projects are effectivelyoperating in Vietnam, and the organisation’s support in knowledge, technique,management and finance have contributed to the sustainable development inVietnam, she said.

The top legislatorhighlighted Vietnam’s efforts in actively engaging and contributing to UNESCO’swork, saying that the country is undertaking the role as a member of the UNESCOExecutive Board and the World Heritage Committee and running for the post ofUNESCO General Director.

Lauding Bokova’ssuccess and contributions through two working terms, the NA Chairwoman spokehighly of Bokova’s dedication in strengthening the partnership between Vietnamand the UNESCO.

For her part, Bokova saidduring her current Vietnam visit, she held talks with Vietnam’s authorities to seekmeasures to increase cooperation between Vietnam and UNESCO, as well as ways toimplement the memorandum of understanding between the two sides for the2016-2020 period.

She also signed anagreement to establish two category 2 centres for mathematics and physics underUNESCO’s sponsor.

The UNESCO leaderhighly valued the Vietnamese top legislator’s sharing on socio-economicdevelopment of Vietnam, and the promotion of values of UNESCO-recognised culturalworks. Gender equality of Vietnam has also in good progress with women holdingmany important positions in the government systems and organisations.

The two sides also exchangedviews on the current role of UNESCO.-VNA
