Saint Petersburg (VNA) – The National Assembly of Vietnam will soon implement thesustainable development goals (SDGs) self-assessment toolkit built by the Inter-ParliamentaryUnion (IPU) and the United NationsDevelopment Programme (UNDP).
Vietnamese NAChairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan made the pledge at a meeting with IPU PresidentSaber Chowdhury in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on October 14 before attending the137th IPU Assembly.
Ngan thanked theIPU President for attending and sharing his experience at an IPU symposium onclimate change adaptation held Ho Chi Minh City in May.
She also spokehighly of President Chowdhury’s contributions to the IPU’s activities during the2014 – 2017 tenure and expressed her belief that the IPU will continuepromoting its role and position as the world’s largest parliamentarycooperation organisation and supporting its member parliaments for peace,democracy, cooperation and sustainable development.
For his part, PresidentChowdhury lauded the Vietnamese NA’s dynamic and responsible participation in theIPU’s activities as well as its strict implementation of the IPU’s resolutions.
He believed thatthe relationship between the IPU and Vietnam will develop further and Vietnamwill make more effective and practical contributions to IPU in the years tocome.
Ngan affirmedthat the Vietnamese parliament will include SDGs in the nation’s socio-economicdevelopment programmes in line with the Hanoi Declaration ratified at IPU-132 heldin Vietnam in 2015.
On thisoccasion, the NA Chairwoman handed over a letter of invitation to PresidentChowdhury to attend the 26th Asia Pacific ParliamentaryForum (APPF) to be hosted by Vietnam in January 2018.-VNA
