Since the beginning of this year, the provincial Department ofEducation and Training, together with the non-governmental organisationHue Help, has implemented a programme providing water safety andswimming courses for 90 PE teachers, who receive certification and thenteach these skills to their pupils across localities in the province.
The programme, called “Swimming for Safety”, ispart of a wider 2 billion VND (93,000 USD) project tackling disasterrisks and supporting children affected by climate change over threeyears from 2015, funded by the Norwegian Church Aid organisation.
The “Swimming for Safety” programme has been implemented over the lastcouple of years in a number of primary and secondary schools in theprovince, helping thousands of children learn how to swim.
It is expected that about half of the province’s children aged from 6to 14 will possess water safety and survival skills by the end of 2015.
According to the provincial Department of Labour,Invalids and Social Affairs, there were more than 30 drowning cases inthe province from 2013 to the first quarter of 2015, with most of thefatalities children.-VNA
