Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – Nine Lao citizens who areirregular migrants or have undocumented marriages and currently residing in theborder district of A Luoi, Vietnam’s central province of Thua Thien-Hue, tookVietnamese nationality on September 6.

At the event to announce the President’snationality granting decision, Vice Chairman of the Thua Thien-Hue People’sCommittee Phan Thien Dinh said after becoming citizens of Vietnam, they willhave their residence registered, personal papers provided and rights andlegitimate interests ensured. They will also benefit from support policies tostabilise their lives.

He asked local relevant agencies to enhance themanagement of border, residence, irregular migration and undocumented marriagesacross border, while facilitating the registration and management of newVietnamese nationality holders’ civil status.

It is also necessary to further reinforce thespecial friendship and solidarity between Vietnam and Laos, including betweenThua Thien-Hue and Lao provinces, he added.

According to the provincial Department ofJustice, irregular migration and undocumented marriage are years-long issues inthe localities sharing the border with Laos, including A Luoi district.

After many years of residing in Vietnam’sterritory, most of them have managed to integrate into the local society.However, as they haven’t adopted the Vietnamese nationality, they and theirdescendants haven’t had full citizenship, which has not only posed numerousdifficulties to their lives but also led to complex problems in residencemanagement and border security between the two countries.

Under an agreement on the settlement ofirregular migration and undocumented marriages in border areas between theVietnamese and Lao governments, Thua Thien-Hue and the Lao provinces of Salavanand Sekong have jointly conducted surveys to have consistent statistics aboutsuch cases in A Luoi district, the justice department noted.

Vietnam and Laos share a border of 2,337km thatruns across 10 Vietnamese provinces and 10 Lao provinces. The 85km-long sectionin Thua Thien-Hue is in A Luoi district.-VNA
