Bangkok (VNA) – The fifth strategic dialogue between Thailand and the US took place in Bangkok on December 16 to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional issues of mutual concerns, including cooperation in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS).

Apichart Chinwanno, undersecretary of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led a delegation to attend the event, while US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Russel and US Ambassador to Thailand Glyn Davies represented the US in the dialogue.

The two nations’ diplomats talked about strengthening bilateral partnership in defence, security, trade-investment, education, health, science and energy. Other issues on the agenda included human trafficking and illegal migration, cross-border crime, and peace keeping.

They also discussed the bilateral cooperation framework in ASEAN along with the recent developments in Thailand ’s relations with neighbouring countries.

The first strategic dialogue between Thailand and the US was held in 2005 as a channel and mechanism to ensure mutual understanding and trust.

The 2015 dialogue holds significant meaning in the bilateral relations as it is the first talks between the two countries after three years, with the previous one taking place in Washington in June 2012.-VNA
