Hanoi (VNA) – The Thai Government willlaunch biometric checks nationwide for mobile phone users to prevent fraudulentelectronic transactions.
According to a plan revealed by the country’s telecomsregulator on November 6, service centres and retailers across Thailand willreceive biometric devices while mobile phone users will have to register theirSIM cards from December 15. Initially, only post-paid mobile phone users willbe required required to register their personal information.
All consumer data will be checked with informationstored on their national identification cards and sent to the nationaldatabase.
Secretary-General of the National Broadcasting andTelecommunications Commission of Thailand Takorn Tantasith stressed that themeasure is not aimed at tracking users, but to enhance security, especially ine-transactions. It will also ensure security in unstable southern provinces ofThailand, he added.-VNA
