Thailand to lift ban on political activities in June

The ban on political activities, which has been imposed in Thailand since the coup d’état in May 2014, will be lifted in June, said Thai Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon.

Bangkok (VNA) – The ban on political activities, which has been imposedin Thailand since the coup d’état in May 2014, will be lifted in June when allnew political parties are established, said Thai Deputy Prime Minister andDefence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon.

He made the announcement in responseto parties’ calls to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to liftthe ban, at a meeting hosted by the Election Commission (EC) on March 28.

"But we have to wait for newparties to be established so all parties can move forward together inJune," he said.

Political activities will only befully allowed after the organic bill on the election of MPs becomes law,according to an NCPO order.

Thailand currently has 69political parties. After the coup d’état in May 2014, all political activitieshave been banned in the country.-VNA
