Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s Digital Economy Promotion Agency (DEPA) is scaling upefforts to forge the establishment of Thailand-based game service providers asanother driver for this multibillion-baht industry.
DEPA President andChief Executive Nuttapon Nimmanphatcharin said Thailand's game industry wasvalued at 29 billion THB (nearly 1 billion USD) in 2020 with an average growthof 14 percent per year. The industry is projected to be valued at 33 billion THBthis year.
Gaming is part of thedigital content industry that has grown in line with the world's technology andnew consumer lifestyles, he said.
However, the countrystill lacks online game service providers and games publishers, especially theformer that act as key agencies to own, lease or operate businesses linked togames as well as handling game exports to the world market.
Currently, Thai gamedevelopers have to share 60-70 percent of their sales with game serviceproviders and publishers, most of which are international firms, especiallyfrom Japan, the Republic of Korea, Canada and Singapore, Nuttapon said.
DEPA on February 16inked a memorandum of understanding for cooperation with the Thai Game SoftwareIndustry Association (TGA) to support and promote digital content, includinggames.
Nuttapon said theagency has sought a budget of 400 million THB from the government to supportthe industry through the fiscal 2022 budget.
The cooperation isaimed at creating more value in the industry and increasing new workopportunities as well as supporting digital manpower in the industry, he added./.
