Thai will host the CLMVT forum this year from June 16 to 18 (Illustraive image - Source: NNT)Bangkok (VNA/NNT) – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has proposed a cooperation scheme in CLMVT countries (including Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand) to expand land and air connectivity that will provide a stimulus to tourism.
At Thailand Travel Mart Plus the Greater Mekong Subregion 2016 event in Chiang Mai, TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn has revealed the progress of tourism development between Thailand and Mekong River countries to the media and tourism entrepreneurs along with delegates from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.
He said 98 million tourists visited ASEAN countries last year, representing a 7.3 percent increase year-on-year, with 42 percent of them choosing the CLMVT countries. He pointed out that this figure has grown by 62 percent during the past five years.
To accommodate the increasing tourist activities, the TAT has proposed the CLMVT Linkage scheme with Air Linkage and Land Linkage projects, including new flight routes and the construction of new roads as part of the ASEAN Highway connecting Thailand with Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.
The vision of the connectivity project also seeks to incorporate connectivity with other countries in the region, such as through the R3A Road, connecting Thailand and Laos with China; the East-West Economic Corridor project; and the New Trade Line connecting Thailand with Laos and Vietnam.-VNA/NNT
