GI is aname or symbol used on products which have a specific geographical location ororigin and possess qualities or a reputation that are related to that origin.
The Department of Intellectual Property under the ThaiMinistry of Commerce has issued GI certifications for 99 products across 66localities, with Sarika durian the newest one awaiting approval.
The Ministry of Commerce will work to push the registration of GI products inall 77 provinces of the country next year.
Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha previously voiced his hope to have alllocalities to establish their own GI products so as to attract internationalvisitors.
Besides, there are currently 16 foreign GI products in Thailand, mainly of countriesin the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) such as Kampot pepper ofCambodia and Bolaven coffee of Laos.
Products from other nations, including grape of California, the US, Chile’s PiscoBrandy, Italian Grana Padano and Asiago cheese, and Kobe beef of Japan arewaiting for approval.-VNA
