Bangkok (NNT/VNA) – Thai Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has presided over theplanting of a sapling of the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree given to Thailand bySri Lanka as a kind gesture to the Thai government.
The sapling was planted in Ayutthaya province. The February 19 ceremony waswitnessed by high-ranking officials including Gamini Jayawickrama Perera,Minister of Buddhasasana and Wayamba Development of the Democratic SocialistRepublic of Sri Lanka, who is currently visiting Thailand as special envoy ofthe President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
The sapling isintended to commemorate the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and to bless the reignof King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun.
It came from the mostsacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree in Sri Lanka’s ancient city, Anuradhapura. The treeis the oldest remaining offshoot of the original Sri Maha Bodhi tree inBodhgaya, India, under which the Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. In thisconnection, the presentation of the sapling reflects Sri Lanka’s determinationto further strengthen its relations with Thailand.-NNT/VNA
