Tay Ninh (VNA) - Thesouthern province of Tay Ninh has release more than 515,000 fry of various fishspecies into the Dau Tieng Reservoir to regenerate fishery resources during theongoing rainy season.
The fish includebighead carp, grass carp, common carp, tra fish, bronze featherback and Asianred-tailed catfish, and other fish species.
The 27-sq.kmreservoir, located in parts of the three provinces of Binh Duong, Binh Phuocand Tay Ninh, provides water for agricultural and industrial production andhousehold use in the provinces and Ho Chi Minh City.
Before the release,the Tay Ninh People’s Committee decided to ban all fish catching in thereservoir between October 15 and November 15 to protect newly-released fishfry.
The provincialDepartment of Agriculture and Rural Development has asked localities, in cooperationwith the Dau Tieng-Phuoc Hoa Irrigation Exploitation Company, to inform localfishermen about the decision.
The department alsoasked agencies to tighten inspections and penalise anyone illegally catchingfish in the reservoir during the period.
Nguyen Van May, DeputyDirector of the department, said the release of fish fry into the reservoir hasbeen regularly implemented since 2005 and has helped regenerate fish resourcesfor locals to catch.
The release of fishfry has contributed to enhancing the awareness of locals about protectingfishery resources in the reservoir.
The departmentreleases about 800,000-1 million fry of various fish species into the reservoireach year.
The reservoir has about 54fish species, with many high-value fish species like bronze featherback, Asianred-tailed catfish, marble goby and helicopter catfish, according to theResearch Institute for Aquaculture No 2 under the Ministry of Agriculture andRural Development./.
